There are many things that affect who we are and how we relate to the people in our family. I believe the main cause is "birth order." Birth order is whether our parents had us first, second, last or as an only child. Birth order is believed to have a lasting effect on psychological development. The theorist Adler studied if birth order will reflect on people's perspectives. He found that birth order plays a main part in someone's personal characteristics. He also explains that children are all different, they have individual characteristics that are impacted from birth order and that birth order impacts the way adults deal with life and interact in the society. Birth order plays many roles in the way we develop relationships whether it is love, friendships, or work related relationships. "All these aspects of someone's personality come into play when we look at birth order." Alder says.
In my family, I am the youngest of four and we all have fairly different personalities and outlooks on life. In my family, my brother Shawn is the oldest and he relates exactly to Adler's theory. Shawn has very high expectations from my mom, he is always given responsibilities, especially when it comes to having to babysit his siblings when we were younger. Shawn is very authoritarian and strict, feels power is his right and when encouraged he is very helpful. My second older brother, Corey also relates to Adler's theory. Corey is very independent, rebellious, especially when he doesn't feel like he is getting equal treatment with Shawn. He is very expressive and creative and likes to be artistic. My brother Ryan, the middle child doesn't relate to Adler's theory because Adler believes that the middle child doesn't have the spotlight, often feels forgotten. My brother is the opposite of Adler's theory because my mom gives him a lot of attention and he often is under the spotlight. The last born child, which is me, relates exactly to Adler's theory. Adler says that the last born child is spoiled by the entire family, never "dethroned" and may be accustomed to always getting their way, seen as a rule breaker, very charming and adventurous.
In my family's birth order Adler's theory is very accurate and can relate to my family. The reason my brother Ryan the middle child is the opposite of Adler's theory is because when we were younger Ryan was always the child left out and never gotten attention and now my mom gives him a lot of attention. Ryan could also not be irrelevant to Adler's theory is because he is often depressed, therefore my mom likes to give him a lot of attention.
